Manchester United, plagued by many injuries this year already, could add one more to that list, with Casemiro substituted in Brazil’s World Cup qualifying match against Venezuela. The veteran is a stalwart in Erik ten Hag’s midfield – making him a big miss for the Red Devils if their worst fears are confirmed. According to the Red Devil’s official website, the severity of the Brazilian’s ankle injury is unknown.

United do not play again until October 21, but the 31-year-old Casemiro previously described as “magnificent” has a chance of missing that fixture. Brazil face Uruguay on Wednesday, and the match could serve as a revealer of whether or not the midfielder will be match-fit for his club next weekend.

Brazil manager Diniz stated: “Casemiro asked to come off due to a blow to his ankle.” Before his substitution, Selecao Canarinha had been in control of the match – they would end up drawing. United fans will be hoping his withdrawal was only a precaution.

Investigation into Injuries

The situation at Old Trafford regarding injuries is so dire that the club has started an investigation into why their players have spent so much time injured. Mark Critchley, of the Athletic has reported that the Red Devil’s Football Director, John Murtough, confirmed the presence of an investigation.

Several first-team players, besides Casemiro, are currently sidelined for Ten Hag. Those include the likes of Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bisaka, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Kobbie Mainoo. A slew of other stars have missed time this campaign with lesser knocks and muscle aggravations.

Murtough admits that the injuries have limited Ten Hag’s ability to get the most out of his squad. “That’s two-thirds of the squad and means that Erik has not been able to pick his strongest XI once this season.” A potential spell on the sidelines for Casemiro would further restrict the Dutch coach’s ability to pick his strongest starting lineup.
