My Team's Response to BJ

Yesterday, my cornermen Greg Jackson and Phil Nurse filed their response to BJ Penn's letter to the NSAC. We also gave the Commission a DVD showing the breathing technique used in the past - you can download it from http://www.box.net/shared/cfl37yh0la). It's now in the Commission's hands - I'll blog more later about my recent trip to Europe.

    i think the hole Vas thing was so blown out of perportion its laughable,if everyone is so concerned about a little residual of Vas left on georges back giving him an advantage,how the gobbs they wipe on each fighters face before the fight even begins,as such after the first few exchanges and clinches the VAS is spread on gloves hands forearms chests backs legs etc.....,so if VAS is causing an issue it should be banned or only used when a fighter is cut!

      exactly what im saying and BJ fans must not have any faith in BJs striking. if BJ was slippery GSP would have just stood up with him and knocked him out and not just cried about it. i know if i was fighting somebody and they were slippery i would change my gameplan and try something else. it just makes BJ look like a one trick pony

  White says the greasing was "no different" than the illegal wraps discovered on the hands of boxer Antonio Margarito prior to his recent fight against Miguel Cotto. Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo, both had their licenses revoked for at least a year by the California State Athletic Commission.
  
  "You put another fighter at a huge disadvantage, which is very dangerous," White said.
  
  Mr. White goes on to say
  "Do I think Georges was trying to cheat? Absolutely not at all. But that cornerman was rubbing grease on him. You cannot do that."
  
  Being the owner of the UFC Danas words will carry a lot of weight with the commission.
  Dana Has already stated that something illegal has happened. But he's going to have a hard time separating Georges St. Pierre from the corner because the Penn camp told the commission prior to the fight to watch out for Georges St. Pierre greasing; they didn't say to watch out for Phil Nurse they didn't say to watch out for Greg Jackson. They said to watch out for Georges St. Pierre!!
  
  When the commission steps up and verifies that the Penn camp did warn them about Georges St. Pierre before the fight and no one else. It will be hard for Georges to NOT be tied into his corner.
  
  Analogy
  That is like if someone called the police and said Georges St. Pierre is going to rob a bank and they go to the bank and catch Georges St. Pierre Phil Nurse and Greg Jackson robbing the bank and they only arrest Phil Nurse and Greg Jackson and say that Georges St. Pierre had nothing do with robbing the bank.

  The decision may not be overturned but losing half your purse and being suspended for a whole year(may result in revocation of WW title)could definitely qualify as legal trouble.

Well, I for one, give you my full support Georges! I understand BJ's concernin all this, but the way he's handled all this, and continues to handle this, is the most unprofessional thing I've ever seen. I'm glad to see that YOU, on the other hand, have handled all this with class, maturity, and professionalism. Just take care of yourself, and hopefully all this mess will be over soon. I hate that it's put a damper on the best fight I've ever seen! Can't wait to hear about Europe!!!

This was a very intelligent, well thought out letter of response that debunked allegations against you from all angles. This really should leave little doubt in the commission's mind as to you and your corner's innocence. I myself am pretty disgusted at how some people (even if it is a radical minority) tried to turn your performance into an all out scandal. I hope this cuts through some of the ignorance I hear about on this issue. Good job, and you have all of our continued support.

  First let me start buy saying I respect however you may feel about the greasing issue,(EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion) but I must respectfully disagree on the reference you used from Dana White. I have brothers who boxed both as amateur and professional boxers. I have a little knowledge in this category so please belief me when I say Dana White is a straight IDIOT to compare GSP's corner with Margarito's corner. Vaseline will eventually make both fighters slippery wether it was intended to or not, it's the nature of the product for God sake. As for the boxing an hardening agent in a boxers hand wraps can liken his fists to bricks. Margarito's corner could have gotten Mosely killed with their action! Sorry vaselines won't get anybody killed! Please remember it hasn't been ten years since the last boxer died in the ring from a punch. So I personally think Margarito having his licenses revolked for a year wasn't good enough. To even attempt to compare the two I find extremely offensive. Please don't take everything Dana says as gospel his track recorded for such matters has shown most watching and listening that that just not the case.

Then I'm afraid your going to be all around pissed, because bj greased himself right before the first round. bj slaps himself in the face repeatedly with both gloves before each fight. So if you feel vaseline's an issue than your issues also with bj. Just a thought and I know I might be out there with this BUT if bj was having a problem with his grip, he really doesn't have anyone to blame but himself. Or maybe just maybe GSP actually prepared for bj and was able to counter an stuff any and everything bj threw or attempted to throw at him. I mean GSP is known for doing this to his opponents after all. Maybe it was a just a great fight.

Also we are talking about B.J Penn here he has high level BJJ so you cannot say he can't do anything off his back just because he never has in his other fights.... That jailbreak he pulled off on you was AWESOME that is how good his BJJ is.

It is amazing to see that throughout these allegations you and your team have remained so incredibly honourable, humble and respectful. Trust in the commission to do what's right... Please take comfort in the fact that you are gaining more and more fans each minute of the day. People look up to you because you are the one changing the face and character of MMA. The old children's rhyme "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me" just is not true. I wish that BJ Penn could be taken to court for what he has been doing to try to ruin your good name and reputation. Low blows are one thing, but this attack on you and your team is a true outrage. It is unfortunate that because he could not touch you in his "fight to the death" BJ is now trying to destroy you with his words. Knowing that you are the bigger person is all that I need to believe in you and regret that you have been injured by the Penn camp's evil intentions. U know what I mean. BJ penn has nothing but excuses, yet to see him explain, all his comments on primetime about how he was going to fight to the death. I guess he must have been on his medicine again, which has caused him to lose his mind and his corners as well. GSP by far you are the number one mma fighter in the world. You have class and are the most humble athlete that i know. You prove that with your dedication and hours of hard work in the gym, is what it takes to be a really champion. You inspire alot of us and you will have all the support in the world over this issue and all your battles. Hope you remain champion of welterweight for many years to come and who knows, maybe one day take on the middleweight title.

I have been an MMA fan since before "The Beginning" and anyone who knows MMA, knows that BJ cannot compete with the new GSP. BJ has peaked and will no longer evolve because he and his training camp refuse to "Think Outside The Box" and Grow. It's a Team Effort... BJ's Camp had every Opportunity to Look for ways to better perform but instead chose to run their mouths and be on TV

Although my eyes are already tired from working on the computer all day, I just got through the entire 17 pages, I couldn't stop reading I had to finish it, a phenomenal letter, worth the read!
I really hope it puts an end to this situation. I have been heart broken for weeks over this whole predicament which really has been promoted to a scandal.

Your true fans didn't need to read this to know you didn't cheat, but it will surely make for a very good case to the NSAC. I especially liked John Danaher's letter, and how detailed it was. The facts that the grease would have been counter-productive for you, and that more vaseline spreads to the body from the face, than what was mistakingly applied to your shoulders, really should hit home. Also the fact that you were wiped down,while BJ probably ended up with more grease on him than yourself.

Just keep training man, and use this as motivation. Don't let nobody bring you down.

I've been a MMA fan for a long time and I have never seen someone with such disapline, honesty and a desire to be the best they can be before you came along Georges. I admire your desire to make yourself better and in so doing make the quality of MMA fights higher and more interesting. Keep striving to be the best man you can be and there will be no doubt in the end as to the true nature of your character.

Great job in keeping us informed; and even better to see you're being a true man about the whole thing and telling/showing the full story.

BJ probably thinks that by slating you and your cornermen so much recently, that he has ruined your reputation and boosted his own.... but as you can clearly see from your support on YardBarker alone, it has in fact done the complete opposite.

Good to see you're keeping strong and honest in the whole thing; it's a shame BJ couldn't be a man about the loss, instead of making up stories like a child.

We all look forward to hearing about Europe (especially London for me) - now get back in that gym and forget about BJ Penn..... he's a loser and you're a winner!! The Alves fight is going to be amazing! :o)

Wow...I thought you beat him bad on 01/31...I think 02/25 is just as convincing of a victory. Nurse's statment made sense. He put the vaseline on the back of his hand that was on your back. Unless he made his hand turn 180 degrees he didn't put anything on your back.

I read the whole 17 page letter,it shows me what i thought all along,it just bothers me why people can't see how much better you have gottin since your first fight with him.The amount of vaseline transfer during a fight has to be taken into account as well ,the amount bj put on his right hand while slapping his own face before the fight even started then transferring it to gsp's back,arms,the back of his head while clinching was way more than the tiny amount that might have been on by phil nurse's hands,so please realize,to me there is no issue here other than the smear job being done by bj.

ok, you guys don;t want to hear it but it's true. i think gsp is a ridiculously good fighter. but we deserved to see ai fight w/o greasing. bj has a point. go ahead and give me 52452345 thunbs down, but it doesn't negate the fact that gsp cheated. personally, i think he would have won the fight anyway. that doesn't discount the fact that him (or his trainers) cheated. We (the fans) deserve better. I'm sure I'll be crucified for this comment, but I don't care, It's the truth.

From watching the fight my first thought was Bj doesn't seem to be in shape and isn't doing anything, which has a lot to do with the fact that GSP was all over him in all aspects of the fight. I think it is a serious case of BJ bit off more than he could chew. The whole Vaseline thing I don't get I watched the official give GSP a good wipe down with a towel before the start of each round to get rid of any water or anything else that might have been on his upper body, don't think for a start that GSP or anybody in his corner had any intention of cheating in anyway. From watching the three prime-time programmes on the build up to the fight BJ's whole demeanor ties in to his response at loosing the fight over confident, disrespectful and certainly not honest or humble in defeat, not a good ambassador for the sport. I agree with Raz and Jonathon, how does swallowing all that trash talk and razor blades feel now BJ?

I wonder if BJ is ready the letter from his resort, as I am sure that he is taking a break from training. The response was well written, professional, and civil. BUT, where is the response from you, GSP? I know that GSP has spoken publicly about this but if I were the one reviewing this, I would want to see GSP's response...in writing. Really just as respect to the NSAC to show that this issue is being taken seriously by GSP as I have no doubt that he is taking it seriously. I am a huge fan of GSP, a fun of BJ (yes, even though he ran his mouth too much), and other various fighters. I do not know GSP in any way other than how he presents himself on TV. From that I take him as a respectable person with values and morals. Has there been a formal response by GSP and not his trainers, corner men, or manager?

I will say again.... BJ could've been smothered in vaseline from head to toe &still would've been owned!!!! GSP, half asleep during the fight still would've dominated Baby j !!!! I think "baby j" had baby oil on. He looked more greasy during the fight anyhow. Basically it just doesn't matter, grease or no grease, GSP is at a higher level period!!!!!!! GSP, DON'T GIVE HIM HIS WAY BY FIGHTING HIM AGAIN, HE DOESN'T DESERVE IT!!!! (Truth be told, he really doesn't want to anyway.) BJ is jealous of GSP... This is why he is trying to make less of him. I have to say, I was always a fan of BJ until this fight - before this fight actually - he lost my respect with all the trash talk and I know its "Hype" etc. etc. but you've got to draw the line somewhere. I strongly admire the fact that GSP doesn't think that he's "all that" and that's what's gonna get him through the next fight - being humble and respectful says a lot. Canada is proud!

Call me naive, but a lot of what they said in the letter made tons of sense. I actually thought he cheated too for a while, even while considering myself a fan. But after reading what they had to say, I don't have a problem with it. It is pretty tough to restrict vasoline only to the face once the fight starts, with all the punching, grabbing, posturing and everything. How many times in the guard has one fighter buried his face into the other fighter's chest? Just one of many ways it could spread.

I only wish at least half of you were jiu-jitsu practitioners.

Anyone who practices jjiu-jitsu knows that when the person on top is greasy
he will be very hard to get into a submission.

I choose to beleive the facts and the fact is from personal experience "The top person is very hard to submit with a greased back, neck and shoulders.

This is not the 1st time people have been caught for being slippery.

It is common practice in mma.Do not be so nieve people

Hmmm, how about this......HB gets Vaseline applied to his face before the first round, stands ready to fight, and does the typical BJ move, slapping his face repeatedly!! Hmm, where is the vaseline now? Gloves maybe? Fight begins, punches, strikes etc etc then a clinch, hmmm where might that Vaseline go? Shoulders, arms etc etc!! HB's gloves might just be a way Vaseline transfers to GSP's body!!! That small scenerio is why this whole thing is nothing more than an excuse, for BJ, Hughes, Serra or anyone else who uses it!!!!! Jiu-Jitsu knows that it is extremely difficult to submit a greased opponent who is in top position...

I think Dana's response led BJ's lawyer to file this complaint...and now they are making something out of nothing. As for the fighters who think GSP was greased up, ridiculous. Matt Hughes and whomever else are just sore losers. See the recent interview with Jon Fitch, he did not think GSP was greased up anymore than any other fighter and Jon lost. Some of these fighters have no integrity at all. Clearly they are trying to ruin the reputation of a man who is athletically and morally three's times the men they will ever be.

Do we really want to condone Cheating or extra advantages. Do these fighters really need to snap a persons neck even further or break a leg even more. Once its broken its broken.
So I ask you to ask your self.
When it comes to fighting and all the violence involved.
Do we want to see a fair fight? A true outcome of a battle between 2 men.
Do we need performance enhancers to hurt even more than we already can?

i just wanted to say with all these ppl making excuses for penn and making videos on you tube showing the alleged cheating against not only bj but other fighters as well its makes me laugh because during the fight with koschek they show gsp and the breathing technique and the supposed cheating but also they then pan around to koschek and his corner man does the exact same thing after he applies vaseline to his face!!!! so why hasn't koschek and is cornerman ever been questioned about it.... its only because bj talked all the smack but thats about the only thing he could do....

fighters and owners and commissioners and now a commentator have all said this is NOT cool.
Change it and twist it however you want.
Sure Penn talks smack.Im sure he learned a lesson.
but what you need to realize is ALL of these people are not liars
It is not a HUGE conspiracy against GSP.
Its ok guys. the sport will be much better because of what happened here.

  if you watched the fight of 'the spider' sylva last week, you can see he intentionally greased himself, yet nothing said. you can say "its not a conspiracy" all you want, but when this blatant cheat does not even get any exposure at all, and everyone covers it up...you cant fool everyone all the time....check the tapes, totally blatant - sylva takes all vas from his face and rubs it on his shoulders,arms,chest and nothing is said or done.total embarrassment to the sport.

fellow gsp fans, i was just banned from bj penn's website. no there was no cursing or name calling, all i did was point out that the suppposed vaseline would have transferred both ways and if that was the case why was bj dominated, why was gsp able to grap and hold bj's legs(that apparently had grease on them), and why was he able to grap and hold bj' s hands and wrists(again, apparently greased from transfer), and i simply stated that it must have been everyone's imagination that gsp was able to do this and simply said "suck it up princess, you were dominated by a superior fighter". and i was banned. now, mr ken shamrock is flappin his lips about this and calling gsp a cheater(on penns website) he calls penn a gentleman who plays by the rules. so someone, not me told him "this coming from someone who was banned and fined for using roids" and shamrock freaks out.....so i tried logging in to express my views, and my ip was banned.holy.....

Shamrock the world most dangersous can looks greased from head to toe in every one of his pics and just got caught for steriods LOL. I bet half the fighters in the UFC have had grease put on them at some point in there fights, penn too, its just baby jay is the biggest whiner and cry baby in the sport, along with shamrock ha ha the irony is thick, him getting caught with steriods. It just shows the difference between gsp and penn, mmapuberty has been spewing his stupidity almost daily on here and isn't banned and you say a few negative things about penn and your banned. Here is what the Media doesnt tell you Fighters have been taking illegal supplements and
passing the tests because they have many smart medical Doctor friends. GSP has even admitted about his special "doctor network" in interviews before.
Ever wonder why GSP's face has ACNE.I mean a 28 year old with ACNE.especially in the weeks leading up to the fight.its becaus of the use of steroids, hgh, and illegal testosterone boosters with masking agents.
I mean the guy is way past puberty to be getting sever ACNE dont you think?

I beg you to ask someone who knows..google facial and body features due to hgh and steroid use.

  I've seen what one pimple on GSP from the moment I've start watching MMA. And I've seen past pictures of him from past weigh ins and such. That's not acne. That's normal. Plus there is one factor of steroids that should be very noticable during weigh ins. And uh when I look at GSP, he definatly does not take steroids. Haha sorry to go that route GSP, but hey what's true is true.

I just watched the GSP/Penn fight again for free on Spike. I watched very closely this time to see even if there would have been any advantage/disadvantage with GSP being greased, even though I know this is bunk. The way the fight went and the way GSP dominated was all skill and strength. Penn was not able to deal with being overpowered and got his butt kicked. It is a pure case of sore loser. You rock GSP! Give him a rematch just to prove a point and pound the crap out of him again!

Gsp I love you man. Did he wipe vaseline hell yeah it looked that way but you could also see the commision rep wiping it off. Seriously lets go back in every fight by every fighter and make sure the person putting on vaseline between rounds never touches the fighter again. It happens all the time.... So lets quit crying about it. Change the rules and move on. Besides that what about the clinch or when they are rubbing their faces on each other for good head positions, or just wrestling period. You telling me the huge glob of vaseline put on between rounds to cover a nasty cut is going to stay on that fighters face? Why isn't it there at the end of the round? Simple truth is GSP dominated Penn and would have done it either way.
