Fans' Q&A
Thanks to everybody for leaving comments on my blog entries - I'm really glad to know I have such support! I want to answer a few questions from fans who have e-mailed me, but I decided to answer here so I could share with everybody (these questions are from jhb1994). How important is high school wrestling in MMA? Wrestling is a very important sport and it's probably the sport that helps me the most in MMA. But I didn't start wrestling in high school - I started when I was 19 years old with some of the best wrestlers in the world and one of the best coaches as well. Wrestling is not a sport where you're going to learn how to hurt someone or how to finish him - it's a sport that allows you to control the fight - and that's why it's so important and not enough people give wrestling credit. What is your favorite sport other than MMA? I am a fan of every kind of sport, but I really love ice hockey, basketball & chess. Who is your favorite fighter? My favorite fighter to watch was Kazushi Sakuraba when he was at his best because he had a very unorthodox style and he was very unpredictable.

it's is a conversation that comes up a lot in our circle, many in traditional martial arts don't see mma fighters as martial artist due to, i guess the lack of humility, discipline and restraint of ego that many mma fighters are lacking of..
mma fighters, in my opinion are just as determined and dedicated to their chosen path as traditional martial artists, although the goal may not be the same, i believe that an mma practitioners journey is as much self discovery and enlightenment as a person learning gung fu would be, to me it's a matter of competing against ones anxieties and self limitations and overcoming the chains that you place on yourself..
i'm curious to know your opinion on this debate, from reading blackbelt magazine a while back it did mention that you trained in traditional martial arts...
thank you for sharing!

I made the trip ou to Montreal in April and it was an amazing experience! When is the UFC coming back to Montreal? I heard rumors that your next fight would against BJ would be there but recent rumors are that it will be held in Vegas instead?
Also, you made a guest appearence in Burlington last year and I had the honor of meeting you and getting your autograph, any chance that you will be doing anymore appearences in the Toronto area in the near future?

Can't wait to see you put on your best performance yet against BJ Penn.
Have you ever developed any original techniques or considered starting your own martial art?

I listened to the "GSP is not impressed" and thought it was awesome!
But I thought it missed, one of your best quotes..
It should have somehow included the quote you say about your "haircut"...
BJ Penn "I'm not impressed.. with your haircut".. ; P
But I guess that's a whole other song!
Keep up the hard training and setting a great example as Champion.

Hope that all of your training is going well my friend! If you can just watch BJ's jab when you guys are on your feet I think that you will be fine. Just remember, he likes to keep his thumb extended, instead of tucked in when he throws that hard jab. That is what ends up poking his oppenents in the eye; as I am sure you already are aware of :) Also, counter that upper-cut of his. He seems to be in love with throwing the upper-cut and throws that punch with no regard to the possible consequences from a possible counter-punch from it. Too bad no one has yet to counter on this. Look forward to your next blog Georges.
